Guzzo Awarded Legacy Award from Preservation New Jersey
On November 21 st , Preservationists gathered at Hinchcliffe Stadium in Paterson, NJ to attend the 2024
New Jersey Historic Preservation Awards. Each year, Preservation New Jersey looks for projects that
exemplify outstanding rehabilitations, initiatives that further the goals of preservation and for
outstanding individuals who have greatly contributed to promoting and protecting the tangible remains
of our past. This year’s recipient of the Sarah P. Fiske Legacy Award was Dorothy P. Guzzo, a
Moorestown resident.
Dorothy’ career spans more than three decades in government service, devoted to historic resource
stewardship. As the former Executive Director of the New Jersey Historic Trust, Guzzo assisted in
providing matching grants for capital preservation projects and heritage tourism initiatives. Under her
leadership, the Historic Trust staff doubled in size and annually awarded $15M to worthy preservation
projects. The Historic Trust is a uniquely structured organization that is modeled around the country.
Prior to the Trust, Ms. Guzzo served as the NJ Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer. Of her many
contributions, she was a member of the NJ Heritage Tourism Task Force, founding member of the
Crossroads of the American Revolution Association, served ex officio to the NJ Historical Commission,
Main Street NJ Advisory Committee and is the former chair of the Alice Paul Institute. She has held
elective office, and has been a Planning Board and Historic Preservation Commission member.
Shortly after retirement, along with a dozen dedicated volunteers, she assisted in founding Saving
Historic Moorestown, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the physical historic legacy of
Moorestown, NJ. Dorothy currently serves as its Vice President. In addition, Ms. Guzzo participates on
the Development Committee of 120 East State Street (Trenton) and is a member of the Stickley Museum
